Vino Verité Wine Clubs

Travelers' Club March 2009

Sean Thackrey Pleiades XVI  $30
Thackrey’s wines have developed a cult-like following, and there's a good reason why: you will not likely find the depth, complexity, and unique combination of nose and body like this in any other California red blend. There’s a bit of just about everything in this wine - Syrah, Sangiovese, Mourvèdre, Barbera, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Viognier. Each varietal lends something distinct and memorable to the overall experience in flavor: bright berry flavors form the central core with hints of tar, mint, eucalyptus, and herbs; this is fascinating stuff. It also tends to sell out quickly too, so let us know if you want more!

Pairing Suggestions: If ever there was a wine to experiment with, this is it; try dishes with unique herbs and spices - Italian sausage stew (fennel), a boar roast, or Cornish game hens seasoned with oregano and garlic. Meanwhile, it’s a great match for pizza with hearty toppings.

2000 Vila Barbaresco Reserva  $30
Quite a find here, so we’re more than happy to offer it in the club: an aged Barbaresco that is complex, holding up beautifully, and affordable too: this wine represents the more subtle qualities of the Nebbiolo grape - light red in color with slightly amber-tinged hues, the nose and body offer delicately spiced berry flavors, tea and cedar notes; the tannins are soft, but still present so this wine can perhaps last a bit longer. As is true of many aged wines, give it some time after opening. After about 20 minutes, the nose and flavors unlock their secrets.

Pairing Suggestions: Wine-braised lamp chops; risotto made with beef stock base; pasta with gorgonzola or parmesan sauce.
