2002 R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Cubillo $26
We start with a famous region: Rioja. And there has always been something so unique, intriguing,
and beautiful about aged Rioja. The Lopez 2002 shows the lightness of the vintage, but the
complexity that emerges with time - tea, clove, floral, and orange notes lead to an equally exotic
finish hinting roses, tobacco, and spice. We chose this for a more traditional experience of
Rioja.
2004 Conte D'Attimis-Maniago Tazzelenghe $31
Now to the upper-east side . . . of Italy that is. Colli Orientali del Friuli, located just near
the border of Slovenia, is often best known for its white wines. But this selection represents
one of the age-old indigenous red grapes of the region. The name of the grape, Tazzelenghe, may
seem a bit off-putting, translating roughly to "tongue cutting." However, we are most
impressed with the silky approach of this wine - the midpalate is impressive, with blackberry, a
bit of earthy plum, and hints of chocolate on the finish. Overall, a fresh, original, and inviting
experience.
