2007 Yakima Valley Vintners Viognier "Class
Project"
We doubt you will ever see another wine that could be abbreviated
with the letters "YVVV." Students in the Vineyard and
Winery Technology Program at the Yakima Community College have
much to be proud of: year after year, their "class p
roject" gets top grades from all who end up tasting it.
One reason for the great results may be the teaching and guidance
YVV students receive from Mark Wysling of Parejas Cellars, whose
wines are always favourites of customers in our shop. This
Viognier is rare indeed - well under a hundred cases produced,
so you won't see it elsewhere and it is likely you won't get to
try it again! We'll bring more into the shop so grab it while
you can. Bright notes of apple and pineapple dominate the nose,
which lead to a fresh and vigorous body of green apple, star
fruit, and a nice nutty aftertaste on the finish. Brimming with
fruit and good acidity, this is fantastic with pasta and cream
sauces, even something as heavy as gorgonzola sauce.
2007 G. Descombes Morgon
Bring on the Gamay! Many often forget that Burgundy's most
southern regions do not use Pinot Noir - Gamay is the main grape
here. And, true to Burgundy, the wines are amazingly complex and
beautiful. While many seem to equate Beaujolais with the fresh,
often strange wine of Beaujolais Nouveau, those of you who came
to the Beaujolais tasting this November can recall that the
regular, aged wines from the Beaujolais region are quite
incredible and need much exploration. We are very pleased to
have found this Morgon from Descombes; it is a signature wine
for the region. A very attractive nose of herb-scented black
cherry leads to a vibrant and fresh and juicy main body of
cherry, along with hints of tea and light bramble, ending with
a pleasant floral quality to the mix of flavors and aromas. The
acidity and light tannins provide zing and structure; an
incredibly pleasing wine to drink throughout an evening.
Delightful with roast chicken, game, and sausage.
