2007 R Stuart Big Fire Pinot Noir $15
Rob, otherwise known as "R" Stuart has an impressive
educational history with a degree in Biochemistry and further work at
UC Davis; and not to sound un-romantic, the science in is his
winemaking. He's precise in his style - "Big Fire"
interestingly enough, refers to a Pablo Neruda poem, not necessarily
the fashion of his Pinot Noir. However, past vintages have been pretty
big in expression. This year's, the 2007, is much more delicate in its
mode, sporting lively dried cherry, raspberry, and cola notes,
finishing with herbs and a touch of smoke. A really incredible wine,
especially for its price point - so many good Oregon Pinots are twice
this price.
Suggested Food Pairings: There's a recipe on the R. Stuart
website for duck breasts with honey, ginger, and lavender. Amazing!
2004 Quinta do Encontro Bairrada Red Table Wine $8
The Bairrada region of Portugal is just north of the city of Coimbra,
which has some of the best preserved Roman mosaics in the world. Wines
from this region can be dense, dark, and bold, and the "Q do
E" as its called is no exception: the body is heavy with black
plum, with a touch of tannins for structure and plenty of acidity to
make this come off dry, even though the body is formidable. The finish
has a pleasing bitter note that echoes the best of dark chocolates,
and coats the palate.
Suggested Food Pairings: Marinated pulled pork; raspberry
chipotle glazed flank steak. Good pizza wine too.
2008 Sables d'Azur Rosé $12
A wonderfully lively and round example of Rosé from the famous,
sun and lavender drenched region of Provence. If one could imagine a
geography and climate better suited to produce bright, flavorful wines,
there is no better region than the South of France. This is the newest
vintage from Baron Gassier, and its even more zesty than the 2007,
which we (and everyone else, it's sold out) loved. Upbeat strawberry,
cherry, and melon flavors abound with a hint of green peach, and
lively, long finish. The aroma in the glass alone may bring over the
neighbors, so open with caution.
Suggested Food Parings: Gosh, just about anything! It's
acidic enough to stand up to mildly spicy foods, and could be enjoyed
with grilled items, or lighter fare. Probably a bit heavy for an
opening wine at a party, but great on its own, that's for sure.
Vino Verité: More wine, less attitude!
